Michael is currently the Chair of Council’s Transportation Committee. He is also a member of the Community Standards and Licensing Appeal Committee, which hears appeals regarding compliance orders and business licensing discrepancies, as well as the the City Manager and City Auditor Performance Evaluation Committee which serves an administrative oversight role. He is a City of Edmonton representative on the Northlands board of directors, and is a member of the Edmonton Police Commission Board.
He also oversees the Emerging Economy initiative, under Sustainable Development, which aims to provide a framework of support for local small- and medium-sized businesses in co-operation with Edmonton Economic Development, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, and local business associations. Emerging Economy also promotes innovation and growth in the technology sector, through programs such as TEC and Startup Edmonton.
Michael is married and the proud father of two children. He moved to Edmonton from South Africa in 1974 and has lived in Ward 5 for more than 30 years. In 1998 he co-founded FIRMA Foreign Exchange, which now has 22 locations across five countries.
